Early last year police in Leicester engaged with Leicester City Council and De Montfort University to decorate an urban area with guerrilla knitting. This area was considered by the public to be an area where there was a high risk of becoming a victim of crime, but this perception was not reflected in the actual recorded crime levels.
The intention of this yarn bombing strategy was to reduce the fear of crime by bringing the community together to take ownership of the area through decoration. With the hope that it would bring the public’s perception of crime risk inline with the actual risk as judged by the recorded incidents of crime.
